Junior Coach Program

CMHA Junior Coach Program

We are pleased to announce that the Junior Coach Program will be running again this year.  U18 and U21-aged individuals, who are currently registered for the upcoming season as players, will be able to earn volunteer hours for their family/school volunteering requirement, as well as payment for on-ice help during some team practices and association development.

The first step in joining the program is to attend an orientation meeting (dates TBD).  The Jr Coach Program Lead  will be talking to the participants  about how the program works as well as expectations.  While getting volunteer experience, as well as some compensation for their time, the main goal of this program is to build future coaches who will hopefully come back and coach with CMHA.

Eligibility:

  • Must be currently registered as a CMHA player for the upcoming season
  • Any U18 or U21 player interested in the program must first complete Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders and CATT, which are online clinics through BC Hockey, and anyone 18 years and older must submit a criminal record check.
  • All participants in the program must complete these courses before they will be given shifts.
    - For those  who participated in the program last year they do not need to complete the online courses again, unless the RISAL needs to be renewed.
    - Jr Coaches are responsible for paying for the Respect In Sports course. If the RISAL is taken during the volunteering phase, CMHA will cover the cost of the course.  If it is taken once being paid, CMHA will NOT cover the course.
  • Jr Coaches  will have to perform their 12 volunteer hours, each year, before they start getting paid.
    - For the volunteer sessions, the participants will be evaluated by the coaches, with the higher ranked participants  getting priority for the paid sessions as well as summer development once the volunteer shifts have been completed.
    - Throughout the season there will be a variety of ice times available from Mini C’s through to U11, for  practices in U7 & U9 and association development sessions.

Expectations of a Junior Coach:

  • Offer support with supervision and skill development (demonstrations)
  • Assist the team’s coaches with pucks, cones, nets
  • Interact with players and coaches in a professional manner
  • Assist younger players on and off the ice
  • Lead and instruct a station and or drills on the ice, when directed
  • Ensure the players are safe – gates are closed, objects on the ice
  • Initiate professional relationships with coaches and instructors
  • Communicate with the coach about what the Jr Coach  can improve or work on after every ice time.
  • Submit their timesheets at least once per month to the Jr Coach Program Lead
  • Communicate with their assigned coaches or team manager about any missed sessions, and cc the Jr Coach Program Lead
  • Be a role model & HAVE FUN
