Being a Referee

It takes a lot of people to pull together a great sport like hockey. Referees are there to keep fair play and order for each and every game that is played.

Becoming Certified

Becoming a competent official takes a great deal of time and effort. When you make the decision to become an official you are making a commitment to yourself, your peers, the participants of the game, and the game itself!

The object of the officiating program is to provide efficient and well qualified officials for the game of hockey within the area of jurisdiction as set out below. The aim of this program to promote good fellowship among the officials, to aid and assist in the betterment of hockey, and to maintain a high standard of relationship with the association members, officials, and coaches of the various teams, and leagues to whom the referees make their service available.

The structure of the Officiating Program shall be as follows: Officials must attend at least one (1) referee’s clinic during the year of certification or have this transferred from another Hockey Canada referees Branch program and be able to meet the standards established within the officiating program.

Officials Clinic Prerequisite Pre-TASKs ... (first-year only)

Officiating Levels

Level 1

Must be 12 years old on or before December 31st of the current year;
You should not be able to register if you're younger than 12 or older than 16 years old on or before December 31st of the current year;
It is required to attend a clinic and an on Ice session;
It is required that first year officials complete the online portion through the Hockey University from Hockey Canada.

Level 2

Minimum age of 16 years old on or before December 31st of the current year;
It is required to attend a clinic and get a passing grade of 70% on the exam.

Level 3-6

For those interested in becoming a Level 3 to 6 official, please note that these are invite-only clinics.
